India Celebrates Teachers’ Day: Honouring Dr Radhakrishnan

Teachers’ Day is celebrated across India every year on **September 5** to honour the vital role educators play in shaping society. This date marks the birth anniversary of **Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan**, a distinguished philosopher, teacher, and statesman who served as India’s first vice-president and second president. His legacy emphasizes the importance of education, making this day a tribute to teachers nationwide.
Dr Radhakrishnan’s journey began in **Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu**, where he was born in **1888**. He pursued his studies in philosophy at **Christian College, Madras**. His teaching career started at the **University of Mysore**, followed by a position at the **University of Calcutta**. He also held the role of vice-chancellor at several prestigious institutions, including **Andhra University**, **Banaras Hindu University**, and **Delhi University**.
A notable milestone in Dr Radhakrishnan’s career was his appointment as the first Indian to the **Spalding Professorship of Eastern Religion and Ethics** at the **University of Oxford** from **1936 to 1952**. He was also a **Haskell Lecturer** at the **University of Chicago**, further showcasing his global academic influence.
In **1948**, Dr Radhakrishnan was elected as Chairman of **UNESCO’s Executive Board**, representing India on the global stage. His political career saw him become the nation’s first vice president in **1952** and later president in **1962**. In recognition of his contributions to education and philosophy, he was awarded the **Bharat Ratna**, India’s highest civilian honour, in **1954**.
Dr Radhakrishnan’s influence extended beyond academia into literature and peace advocacy. He was nominated **27 times** for the **Nobel Prize**, with **16 nominations for Literature** and **11 for Peace**. His significant works include **Indian Philosophy**, **The Philosophy of the Upanishads**, and **An Idealist View of Life**, each reflecting his profound understanding of philosophical concepts.
The tradition of celebrating Teachers’ Day began in **1962** when Dr Radhakrishnan suggested that his birthday be observed as a day to honour all educators. This humble gesture has since evolved into a national celebration, recognizing the dedication and hard work of teachers across India.
As India prepares to observe this year’s Teachers’ Day, the legacy of **Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan** continues to inspire generations of educators and students alike, reinforcing the critical role of teachers in building a knowledgeable and enlightened society.
