Gujarat Experiences 6% Rain Surge in Just Three Days

Excessive rainfall has marked the second spell of the monsoon in Gujarat, starting from Friday and continuing through the weekend. The state recorded a remarkable 6% of its total seasonal rainfall within just three days, placing it fourth nationwide for excess rainfall this season.
By Sunday evening, Daskroi taluka in Ahmedabad had received a staggering 263 mm of rain. Notably, half of this amount, about 131 mm, fell in a mere two-hour window from 10:00 to 12:00. The following day, Umarpada in Surat experienced 121 mm of rainfall, with one-third occurring between 6:00 and 8:00 in the morning.
As of Monday morning, Gujarat has surpassed 61% of its total seasonal rainfall, driven by a series of active weather systems. According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), seven talukas, primarily in the eastern part of the state, recorded more than 50 mm of rain by 18:00 on Monday.
Weather Systems Fueling Rainfall
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes this significant rainfall to multiple active systems, including a low-pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and east Rajasthan. Additionally, a monsoon trough stretching from the northeast Arabian Sea to southeast Uttar Pradesh has contributed to the abundant precipitation expected to continue until August 1.
IMD data reveals that Gujarat’s current seasonal performance is notable, with a 35% excess rainfall, ranking it fourth among Indian states. Rajasthan leads with a remarkable 92% excess, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 54% and Jharkhand at 53%. A meteorological official stated, “For Gujarat, it has been a bountiful year with all regions recording excess rain.” Out of the state’s 33 districts, seven reported large excess rainfall, while eighteen experienced overall excess.
Impact of Heavy Rainfall Across Districts
Weather patterns since mid-June have led to this surge in rainfall. Among the districts, Botad has already received 85% of its seasonal rainfall, with Bhavnagar at 82% and Banaskantha at 81%. Despite the heavy downpours, some areas in Gujarat are still struggling with water drainage, as excess rain overwhelms infrastructure.
In Ahmedabad city, localized flooding occurred after 58 mm of rain fell on Sunday. On Monday, the city added another 22 mm by 18:00, while Surat recorded 37 mm. The IMD’s forecast indicates that the state will continue to see significant rainfall in the days to come, underscoring the ongoing influence of the active weather systems affecting the region.
