Deputy Chief Minister Launches Landmark Book on Odisha’s Bell Metal Craft

The Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, unveiled a significant publication titled “Kansa: Forging Traditions, Shaping Futures” during an event held on March 15, 2024. This book, produced by the MGM Foundation in collaboration with the Bhubaneswar Experimental Art and Design Studio (BEADS), aims to document and preserve the state’s rich bell metal craft heritage, which is at risk of fading away.
The launch event took place in the presence of notable figures, including Pankaj Lochan Mohanty, Chairman & Managing Director of the MGM Group, and Tathagata Satpathy, former Member of Parliament and Editor of the Dharitri and Orissa Post newspapers. Artists, scholars, and art enthusiasts also attended, showcasing a collective dedication to safeguarding this traditional craft.
A Focus on Cultural Preservation
The book serves as a vital resource aimed at preserving the cultural significance of bell metal crafts, which are currently facing extinction. It documents various practices, techniques, and personal stories from artisans who have dedicated their lives to this art form. In his address, Deputy Chief Minister Singh Deo emphasized the importance of these efforts: “Through this book, the MGM Group has made sincere efforts to save the dying art and its legacy for future generations.”
During the event, Mohanty elaborated on the book’s significance, stating, “Through the publication of this book, we have made a significant effort to revive and safeguard this dying art form, ensuring its rich heritage endures and inspires generations to come.” He also urged the public to appreciate the value of bell metal crafts, highlighting that damaged items should be cherished rather than exchanged for aluminum alternatives, which lack the same cultural significance.
Inspiring Future Generations
The publication not only highlights the struggles faced by traditional craftsmen but also underscores the necessity of passing these skills to younger generations. Experts present at the event expressed optimism that this book would generate policy support and public interest in keeping these heritage arts alive.
The documentation represents the extensive field research conducted by the Odisha Craft Odyssey (OCO) Fellowship Programme for 2024-25. Over five months, a dedicated team of researchers and fellows worked diligently to produce a comprehensive account of the Kansa (bell metal) craft across 18 villages in Odisha. The book is available in both English and Odia, making it accessible to a broader audience.
Overall, the launch of “Kansa: Forging Traditions, Shaping Futures” marks a pivotal step in preserving Odisha’s bell metal heritage and fostering a renewed appreciation for traditional crafts among future generations. The collective effort by various stakeholders reflects a growing recognition of the importance of cultural preservation in an increasingly globalized world.
