Delhi Entrepreneur Turns Setbacks into a Rs 20 Crore Business

In a remarkable turnaround, Delhi entrepreneur Neeraj Chopra has transformed his entrepreneurial journey from two failed ventures to establishing a successful refurbished mobile phone business, Zobox, valued at Rs 20 crore in just three years. Launched in December 2020, Zobox has quickly gained traction by refurbishing old mobile phones and selling them at significantly reduced prices, all while promoting sustainability.
Zobox operates on the premise that refurbished mobile phones can provide an affordable alternative to new models. Neeraj emphasizes that opting for these devices not only helps consumers save money but also contributes to environmental sustainability. “Opting for refurbished mobile phones allows our customers to save money while also playing a part in creating a sustainable future,” Neeraj stated in an interview with the Weekend Leader.
The startup’s pricing strategy is attractive; refurbished models are typically priced between 30-50 percent lower than their new counterparts. For example, if a brand-new mobile phone retails for Rs 10,000, Zobox offers the refurbished version for just Rs 3,000-5,000. Each device undergoes a rigorous inspection and certification process to ensure quality and reliability, with a six-month warranty included.
From Family Business to Entrepreneurship
Neeraj Chopra was born into a business family in Delhi. His father ran a successful enterprise trading in pesticides and seeds before shifting to the wholesale business of electronic components in Old Lajpat Rai Market. Neeraj completed his secondary education at Naval Public School and pursued a Bachelor of Commerce at Satyawati College, part of Delhi University.
As a young adult, Neeraj was mentored by his father, who introduced him to the family business. At the age of 18, he moved to Hong Kong to gain valuable experience in importing electronic components from China. Following the death of his uncle in 2010, he returned to India and joined the family business, where he faced various challenges.
Neeraj attempted to establish his own businesses in the real estate and power bank sectors, but both ventures ended in losses. It was during this time that he identified a gap in the market for refurbished mobile phones, inspired by the success of companies like Cars24, which specializes in reselling used cars. This realization led to the founding of Zobox, where Neeraj saw the potential to repair and sell mobile phones at affordable prices.
Rapid Growth and Future Plans
Starting with an initial capital of Rs 50 lakh and a small team of around 8-10 employees, Zobox has impressively surpassed a turnover of Rs 20 crore in just three years. Today, Neeraj’s net worth is estimated at Rs 37 crore, and the company is rapidly expanding its market presence across India.
Zobox’s success story highlights the potential for innovation in the tech industry, particularly in sustainable practices. As more consumers become environmentally conscious, the demand for refurbished mobile phones is likely to grow. Neeraj Chopra’s journey from setbacks to success serves as an inspiring example of resilience and entrepreneurial spirit in today’s fast-paced market.
