Chief Justice Gavai Inspires Law Students During Golden Jubilee

At the golden jubilee celebrations of the V M Salgaocar College of Law in Panaji on Saturday, Chief Justice of India B R Gavai shared insights from his unconventional academic journey, garnering an enthusiastic response from law students. He candidly revealed that he spent much of his time outside the classroom, a fact that resonated with many in attendance.
Reflecting on his own law school days at Government Law College, Gavai recounted how he and his peers often sat on the compound wall, relying on friends to mark their attendance. “In my final year, after moving to Amravati, I attended classes only six times, depending again on a friend for attendance,” he said. Despite this, he was surprised to secure the third position on the merit list, while his classmates, who were more diligent in their studies, pursued distinguished careers. The top student became a criminal lawyer specializing in bail matters, and the second ranked went on to become a district judge and later a high court judge.
Gavai’s message to the students was clear: “Examination results don’t determine what level of success you can rise to. Your determination, hard work, dedication, and commitment to the profession are what matter.”
Encouraging Future Generations
During his address, Gavai emphasized the importance of supporting junior lawyers who face financial challenges. He noted that the stipends offered to many young lawyers are insufficient for survival. “The stipend paid to some young lawyers is really pathetic,” he stated, urging senior lawyers to contribute to their welfare. He highlighted the college’s incubation centre, which provides essential resources such as chambers and a library for advocacy training, suggesting it as a model for other law schools.
Justice Mahesh Sonak, an alumnus of the college, also shared his experiences, admitting that he spent significant time at Miramar beach, which is located only 200 meters from the institution. He humorously acknowledged that the beach’s attractions were more appealing than attending classes or utilizing the college library.
In his closing remarks, Gavai appealed to senior members of the legal community to support promising students through scholarships, particularly noting the opportunities for students from India’s tribal areas to study law at institutions such as Edinburgh.
Transforming Perspectives on Law
Justice Bharati Dangre of the Bombay High Court also spoke, highlighting a shift in how younger generations perceive law as a career choice. She remarked, “Law humbles you; it teaches you discipline, patience, and the art of silence.” She emphasized that honesty in practice earns respect that surpasses monetary wealth.
The event concluded with a strong sense of motivation among the attendees, many of whom found Gavai’s journey relatable and inspiring. His candid remarks about academic challenges and career success underscored the broader message that perseverance and passion often outweigh formal accolades in determining future achievements.
The celebrations at V M Salgaocar College of Law served not only as a milestone for the institution but also as a reminder of the potential pathways that lie ahead for its students, regardless of their academic rankings.
