Bhasma Aarti Draws Devotees to Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain

The sacred Bhasma Aarti took place at the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Ujjain on Wednesday, attracting large crowds of devotees who gathered in the early morning hours. This revered ritual, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is performed during a time known as Brahma Muhurta, from 03:30 to 05:30, which is considered highly auspicious in Hindu tradition.

Devotees experienced a vibrant atmosphere filled with Vedic chants, the sound of conch shells, temple bells, and devotional hymns. The ritual involves offerings made with holy ashes, marking it as one of the most significant practices at the Mahakal Temple. Those who attend the Bhasma Aarti believe they receive divine blessings and that their wishes may be fulfilled.

The ritual begins with the opening of the temple doors, followed by a ceremonial bath for the deity using Panchamrit—a sacred mixture of milk, curd, ghee, sugar, and honey. After this purification, the Shivling is adorned with hemp and sandalwood paste, symbolizing purity. The Bhasma Aarti and Dhoop-Deep Aarti are then performed, accompanied by rhythmic drum beats and the resonating sounds of conch shells.
