Assam CM Unveils Bhupen Hazarika Statue and Opens Gaurav Path
Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a statue of renowned singer and cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika on October 31, 2025, in Khelmati, North Lakhimpur. This unveiling marks a significant tribute as part of the year-long celebration of Hazarika’s birth centenary. The statue was erected by the North Lakhimpur Municipal Board at a cost of Rs 40 lakh.
In addition to the statue, Chief Minister Sarma opened the newly constructed Gaurav Path, a project that fulfills a long-standing aspiration of the local community. Developed under the Chief Minister Urban Road Development Scheme (2013-2014), Gaurav Path spans a length of 0.54 kilometers and connects key areas of the town. The project, which cost Rs 2.87 crore, links the National Highway near Shiv Mandir to the North Lakhimpur College Chariali via the NT Diversion Road in Ward No. 14.
The inauguration event was attended by various dignitaries, including Pradan Baruah, a member of Parliament, and several MLAs such as Naba Kumar Doley and Manab Deka. Additionally, the Chairperson of North Lakhimpur Municipal Board, Krishnadhar Sen, and District Commissioner Prabanjyoti Kakoti were present to celebrate these developments.
Earlier on the same day, Chief Minister Sarma also distributed cheques for seed capital of Rs 10,000 each to 27,573 women beneficiaries from Self Help Groups (SHGs) under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan. This initiative, held in Sadiya, is part of the Assam government’s ongoing efforts to empower women and foster financial independence. Among the beneficiaries, 26,342 are from rural areas and 1,231 are from urban areas.
These initiatives reflect the Assam government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and supporting women’s economic participation. The celebration of Bhupen Hazarika’s legacy through the statue serves as a reminder of his cultural impact while the Gaurav Path strengthens the town’s connectivity.
