Anuparna Roy Makes History with Best Director Win at Venice

Filmmaker Anuparna Roy has made history by winning the Best Director award in the Orizzonti section at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. Her film, Songs of Forgotten Trees, tells the poignant story of two migrant women in Mumbai as they navigate the challenges of loneliness and survival. The award was presented by acclaimed French filmmaker Julia Ducournau during the festival’s closing ceremony on October 21, 2023.
Roy, dressed in a white saree, described the moment as surreal while accepting the prestigious award. In her speech, she expressed gratitude to the jury and her producers, particularly Anurag Kashyap, who championed the film from its inception. “This moment is surreal… I want to thank my producer who said yes to the film which did not fit into the boxes of stereotypical films,” Roy stated, highlighting Kashyap’s belief in her vision.
Recognition and Reflection
During her acceptance speech, Roy also addressed the ongoing conflict in Palestine, emphasizing the universal right of every child to peace and freedom. “I want to take a moment and talk about something that is bigger, something disastrous that is happening in Palestine… I might upset my country, but it doesn’t matter to me anymore,” she said. This poignant remark underscored her commitment to social issues beyond the world of cinema.
“Every child deserves peace, freedom and liberation and Palestine is no exception.”
Songs of Forgotten Trees was the only Indian entry in the Orizzonti section, which features international films that push the boundaries of traditional cinema. The film stars Naaz Shaikh and Sumi Baghel, and was produced by Bibhanshu Rai, Romil Modi, and Ranjan Singh, with Kashyap serving as a presenter.
The Venice Film Festival also recognized other outstanding films. The coveted Golden Lion for Best Film was awarded to Father Mother Sister Brother, while the Grand Jury Prize went to The Voice of Hind Rajab. The Silver Lion for Best Director was presented to Benny Safdie for The Smashing Machine, and the Special Jury Prize was given to Below the Clouds. Bashu, the Little Stranger took home the Best Restored Film title, and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress was awarded to Xin Zhilei for The Sun Rises….
Roy’s achievement at the Venice Film Festival not only marks a significant milestone in her career but also highlights the importance of narratives that challenge societal norms. As the film industry continues to evolve, her work stands as a testament to the power of storytelling in addressing complex issues and fostering dialogue.
