Adani Power Ltd, India’s largest private-sector thermal power generator, has secured a significant contract to establish a new thermal power plant in Bihar. The company entered into a 25-year Power Supply Agreement with the Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd (BSPGCL) to supply 2,400 megawatts of electricity. This development is expected to bolster the state’s energy capacity significantly.

The Letter of Intent was issued on Friday, marking a pivotal moment for Adani Power. The project will be based in Pirpainti, where an ultra supercritical thermal power plant will be constructed. The initiative is designed to meet the growing energy demands of Bihar, structured on a build, finance, own, and operate model. The plant will consist of three units, each with a capacity of 800 MW.

In a competitive bidding process, Adani Power emerged successful by offering the lowest supply rate of Rs 6.075 per kilowatt hour. Following this win, the company plans to invest approximately USD 3 billion in the plant and its supporting infrastructure. This investment signals a substantial commitment to enhancing energy production in the region.

The coal needed for the operation of the plant has been secured through the Government of India’s SHAKTI policy, ensuring a stable supply for the proposed facility. The project is anticipated to create between 10,000 to 12,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase. Once operational, it is expected to generate around 3,000 permanent jobs for the local workforce.

With an ambitious timeline, the Adani Group aims for full commissioning of the power plant within 60 months. This project not only represents a critical infrastructure investment for Bihar but also showcases Adani Power’s strategic approach in addressing the region’s energy needs.

The successful bid and subsequent agreement highlight the company’s position as a key player in India’s energy sector, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and reliable power generation.
