Acclaimed Author Baek Se-hee Passes Away at 35, Donates Organs

Baek Se-hee, the author of the bestselling memoir I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki, has passed away at the age of 35. She was declared brain-dead at the National Health Insurance Ilsan Hospital in South Korea. The Korean Organ Donation Agency announced her passing on October 17, 2023. While the cause of her death was not disclosed, it was revealed that she saved multiple lives by donating her heart, both kidneys, lungs, and liver.
Born in 1990 in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, Baek Se-hee studied creative writing before embarking on a career in publishing. Her memoir, published in 2018, chronicled her decade-long battle with mental health issues, particularly dysthymia, a form of persistent mild depression. The book gained international recognition in 2022 after it was translated into English, resonating with readers worldwide.

Baek’s memoir has sold over one million copies globally and has been translated into 25 languages. It has particularly struck a chord with Gen-Z readers due to its candid exploration of mental health conversations between the author and her psychiatrist.
