Two Pune Fighter Pilots Honored for Bravery in Operation Sindoor

Two fighter pilots stationed in Pune, India, received a prestigious Mention in Despatches for their exceptional bravery during **Operation Sindoor**, which occurred from **May 7 to May 10**. Squadron Leader **Saurabh Dharmadhikari** and Flight Lieutenant **Akash Bibikar**, both members of Squadron 15 at **Sirsa Air Force Station**, were recognized for their courageous actions that contributed significantly to the mission.
Both pilots have a shared background, having been inspired by their grandfathers who served in the Air Force. During an interview, they expressed their feelings about receiving the award, stating, “Being part of the operation, achieving the operational tasks, and receiving this award for our efforts is a surreal experience. It is difficult to express in words.”
A Legacy of Heroism
Operating the **Sukhoi 30 MKI** fighter jets, Dharmadhikari and Bibikar are part of a squadron known as the “Flying Lancers,” renowned for their historical contributions during the **Indo-Pak Wars** in **1965** and **1971**. This squadron also played a critical role in the **Balakot Operation** in **2019** and the conflict in **Eastern Ladakh** with China in **2020**.
Both pilots take pride in continuing the legacy of their squadron, which has a history of impactful missions against enemy positions. They noted, “We are proud to carry forward the rich, brave legacy of our squadron that caused significant harm to enemy positions during the previous exploits and now in Operation Sindoor, too.”
While details of their specific roles remain undisclosed for operational security, they emphasized the importance of focus during their missions. “When we were engaged in action, our sole focus was on achieving the target. It took a few days to fully grasp the importance of our actions. This award will always motivate us to deliver our best,” they remarked.
Paths to the Sky
Both pilots made significant sacrifices to pursue their dreams. Squadron Leader Dharmadhikari initially studied **Information Technology** and passed the **Common Admission Test**, while Flight Lieutenant Bibikar successfully cleared the **Joint Entrance Examination (Main)**. Despite these achievements, their passion for flying led them to the Indian Air Force rather than pursuing lucrative careers in the private sector.
Dharmadhikari reflected on his childhood visits to the **Air Force Station** in Pune, especially on **Air Force Day** celebrated on **October 8**, stating that these experiences greatly influenced his decision to join the IAF. Bibikar echoed similar sentiments, saying he enrolled in the **National Defence Academy (NDA)** to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a fighter pilot. “I made my father and grandfather, retired Corporal Madhukar, proud by joining the IAF’s fighter stream and now performing my duty for the country,” he shared.
The recognition of these brave pilots not only highlights their individual achievements but also underscores the ongoing commitment of the Indian Air Force to protect national interests and uphold a legacy of valor and dedication.
