Three Arrested After Firing Incident at Pune Folk Art Centre

Police in Pune have arrested three individuals linked to a shooting incident that occurred during a dance performance at the Ambika Lok Kala Kendra in Daund tehsil. Among those arrested is Kailas Mandekar, the brother of Shankar Mandekar, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The incident took place late on the evening of July 21, 2023.
The police reported that Kailas Mandekar allegedly fired a shot into the air while dancing during the performance, which featured traditional lavani and tamasha acts. This troubling event unfolded around 22:30 local time, leading to immediate concern among attendees. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Details of the Incident and Arrests
Following the incident, authorities registered a case against a total of four individuals, including Kailas Mandekar, Ganpat Jagtap, and Raghunath Avad. The police confirmed that they have seized a weapon and a vehicle linked to the accused. A police official stated, “We have arrested three persons under section 125 and relevant sections of the BNS (Bombay Police Act).”
Witnesses indicated that after the gunfire, Mandekar and his associates quickly departed the venue. This sparked concerns and questions about safety at cultural events in the region.
NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar raised concerns about the police response to the incident. He accused law enforcement of attempting to downplay the situation, questioning why no immediate action was taken following the shooting. Pawar stated, “If the incident took place on July 21, what were the police doing?” He alleged that police had filmed the artists and workers at the venue, claiming no shooting had occurred.
Official Responses and Implications
In response to the allegations, Shankar Mandekar acknowledged his brother’s involvement but emphasized that if any wrongdoing had occurred, it should be addressed appropriately. He clarified that while his brother was present at the folk art centre, he did not possess a valid arms license. “The firearm belongs to Ganpat Jagtap, who has a valid license,” he confirmed.
The case has raised significant issues regarding accountability and the potential influence of political connections on law enforcement actions. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the event, including the reactions of both the police and local officials.
The incident has not only drawn attention due to the involvement of a political figure’s family member but has also highlighted the need for stricter enforcement of laws pertaining to public safety at cultural gatherings. As the community processes this alarming event, further developments may influence public perception of both local governance and law enforcement efficacy.
