Rainfall activity in the catchment areas around Pune has significantly decreased, prompting the state irrigation department to maintain controlled water releases from major dams. On October 3, 2023, the department continued its flood management strategy, which aims to keep water levels between 85% and 90% in the dams, thereby preventing sudden discharges that could lead to flooding.

As of Tuesday, the water level in the Khadakwasla Dam was reduced to 61%. In contrast, the live storages in the Temghar, Varasgaon, and Panshet dams were maintained around 91%. An official from the irrigation department noted, “The controlled release of water was being implemented across dams in the Bhima basin.” Significant releases occurred from the Mulshi, Varasgaon, Panshet, Ujani, and Bhatghar dams on Tuesday.

The water discharge from Khadakwasla was adjusted to 18,000 cusecs, while the release from Mulshi was decreased to 5,600 cusecs. Notably, the discharge from Pavana was halted entirely, as most dams reported minimal rainfall on that day.

Despite the reduction in water discharge, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) remains vigilant, monitoring low-lying areas for potential flooding. An official stated that disaster management teams will continue to be active in vulnerable regions, particularly along the Mutha River, as a precautionary measure in the coming days.

The ongoing management of water levels is critical for ensuring community safety and infrastructure integrity in Pune, especially as weather patterns can shift rapidly. The irrigation department’s proactive approach aims to mitigate risks associated with heavy rainfall and potential flooding while balancing the water supply needs of the region.
