North Central Railway (NCR) has successfully showcased a live demonstration of innovative drone-based solar panel cleaning technology at Subedarganj Station, marking a significant advance in sustainable energy efforts. This initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader Solar Mission, which aligns with the organization’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions and promoting eco-friendly energy solutions.

The trial, conducted under the supervision of Yatendra Kumar, the principal chief electrical engineer, and Pankaj Jaiswal, the chief electrical engineer, highlighted the potential of drone technology in maintaining solar panel efficiency. The drone used in the demonstration is equipped with a 10-litre water tank, weighs approximately 19 kg when empty, and features four nozzles that spray water directly onto the panels. Its GPS-based remote control system allows for precise maneuverability, making it ideal for cleaning panels placed at elevated locations.

During the demonstration, solar panels installed on the building and platform shelters at Subedarganj Station were effectively cleaned, showcasing the practical advantages of this technology. Officials reported that the trial’s results were highly satisfactory, with the drones achieving their objectives of efficient cleaning while utilizing minimal water and no harmful chemicals. This approach positions the method as not only eco-friendly but also cost-efficient, suitable for large-scale implementation across NCR.

Minor design modifications were suggested to the technical team to enhance the system’s compatibility with railway operations. With the successful trial, NCR aims to expand the deployment of drone-based solar panel cleaning across various locations within its jurisdiction in the future.

“The technology is user-friendly and particularly effective for cleaning panels, especially those positioned at height,” stated Amit Malviya, senior Public Relations Officer for NCR. As of August 2025, NCR has generated 53.1 lakh units of solar energy using a total installed capacity of 13.7 MW across various stations and facilities, making it a leader in solar energy production in India.

The adoption of drone cleaning technology represents a forward-thinking approach by NCR, emphasizing the commitment to sustainable practices and the efficient management of solar energy resources. As the railway sector continues to explore innovative solutions, the integration of modern technology is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
