Maharashtra Launches Statewide Organ Donation Awareness Campaign

Maharashtra’s health minister, Prakash Abitkar, has announced a statewide awareness campaign focused on organ donation, set to run from August 3 to 15. This initiative aims to foster a mass movement to support patients awaiting vital transplants. During a recent planning meeting in Mumbai, Abitkar emphasized the need for intensified outreach to address public hesitation and reshape perceptions surrounding organ donation.
The campaign is designed to build trust and significantly raise awareness, ultimately helping patients in need of organ transplants. “The campaign should focus on building trust and spreading awareness at scale, so that patients in need get a new lease of life,” Abitkar stated.
Organ Donation Initiatives Across Maharashtra
The awareness drive will include various department-specific activities, coordinated by divisional transplant committees. District-level programs are also on the agenda, which will feature recognitions on August 15 for the families of deceased organ donors and organ recipients.
The meeting saw participation from key figures, including Meghna Sakore-Bordikar, the Minister of State for the Public Health Department, and Dr. Kadambari Balkawade, the Public Health Department Commissioner. Each district’s guardian ministers will honor donor families and recipients on Independence Day, reinforcing the campaign’s community engagement aspect.
Officials highlighted that successful implementation of the campaign relies on public participation and effective inter-departmental coordination. By increasing public understanding and acceptance of organ donation, the initiative aims to encourage more individuals to consider becoming donors, ultimately saving lives across the state.
