The Maharashtra government has announced the creation of a dedicated “health war room” aimed at integrating various healthcare schemes initiated by both the central and state governments. This initiative, revealed on October 17, 2023, is designed to prevent individuals from receiving overlapping benefits from multiple programs.

The war room will be overseen by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA), which was established to support the state’s development goals. A 12-member committee will comprise administrative leaders from several departments, including Public Health, Medical Education, Social Justice, and Women and Child Welfare, among others.

Praveen Pardeshi, a former IAS officer and current CEO of MITRA, will lead this committee. In addition to his role as CEO, Pardeshi serves as the Chief Economic Advisor to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The committee will also include members from the Chief Minister Relief Fund cell and various welfare departments, ensuring a comprehensive approach to health-related issues.

According to a statement from the Public Health Department, the initiative addresses the problem of individuals receiving benefits from multiple schemes simultaneously, which is not allowable. The aim is to streamline these programs for better efficiency and accessibility.

To further support this initiative, the government will introduce a toll-free number, 18001232211, which will serve as a common contact point for residents seeking assistance with health-related inquiries. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance healthcare delivery and ensure that citizens can easily access the benefits they are entitled to.

The establishment of this war room follows the state’s previous efforts to monitor ongoing infrastructure and social sector projects. The Maharashtra government recognizes the significance of effective healthcare management, especially in a diverse state with a wide range of healthcare needs.

MITRA was set up during the tenure of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to facilitate the rapid and comprehensive development of Maharashtra, emphasizing collaboration with the private sector and non-governmental organizations. With this new focus on health schemes, the government aims to create a more integrated healthcare system that responds effectively to the needs of its citizens.

The initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing public health management in Maharashtra, promising a more organized and streamlined approach to healthcare delivery in the state.
