Livingstone International, one of Australia’s largest medical supply companies, is marking a significant milestone as it expands its operations beyond healthcare. The company has successfully implemented a unique warehousing and supply chain strategy, allowing it to become a leading manufacturer, importer, and supplier to over 20 key industries. With more than 65,000 products, Livingstone caters to sectors such as aged care, education, beauty, hospitality, and mining.

Innovative Supply Chain Management

According to Daniel Linn, Managing Director of Livingstone International, the company’s success stems from its distinctive No Backorder Policy. “Livingstone International has invested in millions of cubic metres of warehousing in Australia, where we can hold up to a year’s worth of supplies for each of our key clients,” he explained.

The company maintains an inventory valued at over $48 million, ensuring uninterrupted supply chain operations critical for the industries they serve. Linn noted that this strategy was particularly valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic when many organizations turned to Livingstone for essential supplies. “The reality is much of what we rely on in Australia is manufactured overseas and imported, often requiring a two to three-month waiting period before products arrive,” he said.

Livingstone’s approach allows them to have stock readily available in Australia, along with the local manufacturing of 120 products to meet client demands promptly. This ability to respond quickly to needs has solidified the company’s reputation in the market.

Diversification and Future Opportunities

Founded in 1984, Livingstone originally focused on medical and healthcare supplies. Over the years, it has undergone significant diversification. “If we can supply products to people when they are unwell, why not also offer items for when they are well?” Linn said, emphasizing the company’s aim to meet customer needs throughout the year. This philosophy has guided their expansion into various industries.

Livingstone’s customer base includes 149 major public hospitals, which rely on the company for kitchen supplies, and 22 airlines involved in food preparation. Additionally, it serves a pathology market leader with over 500 delivery points and supplies lab equipment to the largest mining company in Australia.

As Livingstone celebrates its achievements, Linn is optimistic about the future. “We are already adopting some of the latest technology in automation and AI, diversifying our supply chain across multiple countries, and enhancing our IT infrastructure,” he stated. “Our goal is to continue securing Australia’s supply chain and provide essential products to key industries, ensuring they can serve Australians every day.”

Livingstone International remains proudly Australian-owned, with a presence in 120 countries. The company’s commitment to innovation and customer service positions it for continued growth in the competitive landscape of supply chain management.
