ICMR National Institute of Nutrition Celebrates Foundation Day
The ICMR–National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) celebrated its Foundation Day on March 15, 2024, in Hyderabad, bringing together scientists, academicians, and policymakers to discuss the future of nutrition research in India. The event highlighted NIN’s pivotal role in revising dietary guidelines and creating national nutrition policies.
During a virtual keynote address, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of ICMR, emphasized the significance of NIN’s ongoing nationwide nutrition study. He stated that this research is essential for addressing contemporary health challenges, particularly in a country grappling with both undernutrition and obesity.
Advancements in Nutrition Research
Dr. Bharti Kulkarni, Director of NIN, reflected on the institute’s leadership in public health nutrition, asserting its commitment to enhancing the nutritional status of the population. The event also featured a presentation by Dr. Ch. Mohan Rao, President of the Telangana Academy of Sciences, who advocated for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and personalized nutrition tools to combat malnutrition and health risks associated with climate change.
In a notable segment, Dr. Anurag Bhargava from Kasturba Medical College delivered the inaugural Foundation Day Oration. His presentation focused on the relationship between nutrition and tuberculosis (TB), providing evidence that a well-balanced diet can significantly reduce the incidence of TB.
The celebrations included the launch of maternal nutrition e-modules aimed at training frontline workers, enhancing their capacity to address nutritional needs in communities. Additionally, the Infuse Nutrition Innovation Summit brochure was released, showcasing recent advancements in food technology, AI-driven nutrition, and diagnostics.
