Himachal Pradesh Leads India in TB Screening Efforts
Himachal Pradesh has emerged as a leader in the fight against tuberculosis (TB), achieving the highest screening rates for vulnerable populations under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP). According to a recent report from the Government of India, the state has successfully screened 13,35,336 individuals out of 13,68,327 identified vulnerable residents, resulting in an impressive screening rate of 98 percent. This accomplishment positions Himachal at the forefront of the TB Mukt Bharat campaign, officially known as the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (PMTBMBA).
The National Health Mission spokesperson highlighted the state’s notable achievements in various diagnostic methods. A total of 5,00,054 individuals underwent X-ray screenings for TB, amounting to 37 percent of the total screenings conducted. Remarkably, 96 percent of these tests were performed on asymptomatic individuals, underscoring Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to proactive and community-based health initiatives, which surpasses the national average.
Comprehensive Testing and Support Initiatives
Himachal Pradesh also excelled in microbiological testing, with 2,75,144 individuals tested for TB. Among these, 79 percent were subjected to NAAT-based tests, indicating a strong focus on quality diagnostics. The state’s efforts extend beyond testing to financial support as well. Of the eligible beneficiaries, 5,208 TB patients received Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) benefits, representing 40 percent of those in need. Furthermore, 7,509 TB patients have been provided with nutritional support by Nikshay Mitras, ensuring that most patients receive at least one nutrition kit.
The spokesperson attributed these significant advancements to active community participation and the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders. The combined dedication of health officials, community organizations, and local residents has propelled Himachal Pradesh toward its ambitious goal of eliminating tuberculosis.
The state’s robust performance not only reflects its commitment to public health but also serves as a model for other regions aiming to combat TB effectively. With continued support and engagement, Himachal Pradesh is poised to maintain its status as a leader in tuberculosis screening and elimination efforts throughout India.
