Frequent Power Outages Disrupt Industries and Residents in Pirangut

Frequent power outages are severely disrupting industries and residential life in the Pirangut industrial area, affecting approximately 35,000 consumers. These disruptions, which often last between three to four hours daily, impact both small and large units involved in various sectors, including auto parts, chemicals, and textiles.

The current electricity supply is managed through a single 22KV feeder line, which is inadequate for the growing demand. According to Satish Karanjkar, president of the Mulshi Industries Association, the situation has worsened over the past four to five years. “Some smaller industrial units are now considering relocating their factories elsewhere, even outside Maharashtra,” he noted, highlighting the urgent need for improved infrastructure.

While larger companies have the capacity to rely on diesel generators during outages, smaller units, particularly those near Lavale Phata, are facing significant production challenges. These businesses typically employ between 50 to 100 people each, making their stability crucial for local employment.

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) is aware of the issues and has proposed to bifurcate the overloaded feeder line. However, progress is hindered by difficulties in obtaining the necessary land to install new infrastructure. Deputy Executive Engineer Anand Ghule stated, “We are discussing with the industries and residents and are hopeful that we will reach a consensus on land availability. A final decision has yet to be made.”

The lack of development in the industrial area is further complicated by the absence of a single planning authority for critical utilities like roads and electricity. Ghule expressed that having the area under the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) would streamline infrastructure improvements. “It will help fasten the process if the area is brought under MIDC,” he added.

Residents are also feeling the impact of these power cuts. Ramesh Patil, a local resident, shared, “Regular power cuts for three to four hours have impacted our daily routine, making us dependent on inverters. The hope is that the infrastructure-related issues will be resolved quickly.”

As the community awaits solutions, the ongoing power disruptions highlight the pressing need for infrastructure upgrades in Pirangut and surrounding areas.
