Exercise for Healing: Daily Movement Can Alleviate Trauma
Recent insights into trauma recovery suggest that consistent physical activity can significantly aid in processing and overcoming traumatic memories. Celebrity nutritionist Ryan Fernando shared findings on his social media, emphasizing the mental health benefits of exercise, particularly in relation to emotional healing.
The Impact of Daily Exercise on Trauma Recovery
In a recent Instagram post, Fernando highlighted that just 21 minutes of daily exercise can facilitate brain changes that lessen the emotional weight of traumatic memories. He stated, “Trauma leaves a mark, but movement can help shift it,” referencing a study published in Molecular Psychiatry in 2024. This research indicates that post-traumatic exercise can enhance neuron growth in the hippocampus, a critical region of the brain for memory and learning.
The study reveals that physical activity not only promotes new neuron formation but also helps to weaken the neural pathways associated with fear-related memories. This process allows the brain to gradually “let go” of past traumatic experiences, potentially reducing symptoms such as intrusive thoughts and mood swings.
How Consistent Movement Can Rewire the Brain
Fernando elaborated on the neurobiological mechanisms at play, explaining that regular exercise can increase neurogenesis, the formation of new neurons. This is particularly beneficial for individuals struggling with the aftermath of traumatic events. He noted that activities such as yoga, brisk walking, jogging, or cycling can trigger these positive brain changes over time.
“It’s not about one workout. It’s about building the habit,” Fernando emphasized, encouraging individuals to incorporate movement into their daily routines. By establishing a consistent exercise practice, people may find a pathway toward deeper emotional healing and improved mental health.
The findings underscore the importance of taking proactive steps to manage mental health, particularly for those affected by trauma. As Fernando suggests, making time for daily exercise may offer a valuable tool in the healing process and enhance overall well-being.
