During the 59th ICAAI Con held on March 14, 2024, at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak emphasized the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent asthma, allergies, and other lung-related diseases. His remarks came as part of an initiative by the state government aimed at raising awareness about respiratory health.
Focus on Prevention and Awareness
Pathak highlighted the alarming impact of environmental factors on respiratory health, stating that air pollution significantly increases the risk of developing respiratory diseases. He noted that asthma, considered a type of lung allergy, affects approximately 300 million people worldwide and results in about 450,000 deaths annually, many of which could be prevented through lifestyle changes.
In his address, the Deputy Chief Minister called for individuals to take proactive measures, such as planting more trees, minimizing exposure to dust, and utilizing public transport to help decrease vehicular emissions. “By making these changes, we can reduce the prevalence of asthma and other respiratory conditions,” he said.
Pathak also affirmed that the state government is actively conducting various awareness campaigns through the health department to tackle these health issues. Such initiatives aim to inform the public about the potential dangers of poor lifestyle choices and the benefits of adopting healthier habits.
Statistics and Expert Insights
According to Prof Ved Prakash, Head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care at KGMU, around 5% of India’s population suffers from asthma, with a higher prevalence observed in women compared to men. Furthermore, asthma stands as a leading chronic illness among children, impacting about 14% of children globally.
In addition to Pathak’s remarks, the conference served as a platform for medical professionals to share insights and updates on the latest technologies and treatments in respiratory care. Prof Soniya Nityanand, Vice Chancellor of KGMU, emphasized the importance of such conferences in enhancing medical knowledge and practices.
The event underscored a collective commitment to improving respiratory health through education, prevention, and a collaborative effort between government bodies and medical professionals. As discussions continue around the implications of air quality and lifestyle choices on health, the call for community action remains urgent.
