Chennai Steps Up Dengue Prevention Efforts Amid Rising Cases

The Greater Chennai Corporation has intensified its efforts to combat dengue fever as cases in the city rise. With over 120 confirmed cases reported, health officials are implementing a range of measures aimed at controlling mosquito populations and reducing the risk of further infections.

To address the growing concern, the civic body has launched extensive door-to-door inspections, particularly in areas where dengue cases have been documented. Officials are focusing on identifying and eliminating sources of mosquito breeding, targeting stagnant water in household containers, open drains, and unused overhead tanks. The initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the impact of the disease.

In a proactive move, the Greater Chennai Corporation has deployed more than 1,500 domestic breeding checkers and field workers. These personnel are visiting homes and public areas to raise awareness about dengue prevention and to conduct fumigation drives. Additionally, the corporation has distributed larvicide oils to households, aiming to kill mosquito larvae and further reduce breeding sites.

Health Camps and Community Engagement

To enhance detection and treatment efforts, health camps have been organized in various zones across Chennai. These camps are designed to identify symptoms of dengue early and provide basic treatment for affected individuals. Civic officials are also collaborating with private hospitals to ensure that all dengue cases are reported promptly. This coordination is intended to improve the tracking and control of the disease’s spread.

R. Priya, the Mayor of Chennai, has made an appeal to residents, urging them to cooperate with health teams by maintaining clean surroundings and preventing water stagnation around their homes. The city’s health department is actively disseminating advisories via social media and local cable channels, encouraging residents to wear protective clothing and apply mosquito repellents as precautionary measures.

Ongoing Vigilance and Surveillance

Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation have assured the public that the situation is currently under control, although they remain vigilant due to the seasonal vulnerability associated with dengue outbreaks. Surveillance and spraying activities have been intensified across all 15 zones of the city, with a focus on high-risk areas.
