American Therapist Relocates to Portugal for Health and Peace
Christina Kantzavelos, a 37-year-old therapist originally from California, relocated to Portugal in 2024 seeking a healthier and more affordable lifestyle. Living with chronic illness in the United States had become overwhelming for her, both physically and financially. The challenges of navigating the American healthcare system prompted her decision to move abroad in search of better health outcomes and peace of mind.
Her experience highlights a growing trend among individuals seeking improved healthcare access and a more balanced quality of life. According to Kantzavelos, the promise of the “American dream” often falls short for many, particularly those with chronic health conditions.
Healthcare Differences: A Costly Comparison
Kantzavelos revealed that one of her primary motivations for moving was the stark contrast in healthcare costs between the United States and Portugal. She shared that a one-hour osteopathy session in Portugal costs her 40 euros, a significant reduction from the $275 she used to pay for just 30 minutes in California. Similarly, her essential weekly lymphatic massages are priced at 40 euros for 90 minutes, compared to approximately $175 in the US.
Reflecting on her experiences, she stated, “I know folks who’ve had to open a GoFundMe for their healthcare… It’s depressing. It breaks my heart.” Kantzavelos emphasized her gratitude for being able to afford necessary treatments abroad, but expressed concern over the systemic issues that force individuals to leave their home country for affordable healthcare.
Living in Portugal: A Healthier Lifestyle
In addition to healthcare, Kantzavelos found that the overall cost of living in Portugal is considerably lower. She mentioned that her monthly rent for a three-bedroom, 2,000-square-foot apartment is 1,300 euros, a stark contrast to the estimated $5,000 she would have to pay for a similar space in San Diego.
Moreover, her grocery expenses have also decreased significantly. Kantzavelos spends about 125 euros weekly on organic groceries for two people, compared to $300 in the United States. This affordability has contributed to a more relaxed lifestyle, allowing her to focus on her health and well-being.
Kantzavelos now begins her days at a more leisurely pace, noting that “people here work to live versus live to work in the US.” Her experience in Portugal has been transformative, as she feels “safer, supported, and healthier than I have in years.”
“I feel so much better. I do feel like I’m fully able to take care of my health and feel confident, safe, and secure in where I am,” she added, underscoring the positive impact this move has had on her overall well-being.
Christina Kantzavelos’s journey reflects a broader conversation about the challenges of the US healthcare system and the potential benefits of seeking alternatives abroad. As more individuals consider relocating for health reasons, her story serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost associated with inadequate healthcare access.
