Adilabad district in Telangana has documented a marked decline in HIV positive cases, with 130 detections reported for the period from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. This decline is attributed to enhanced testing initiatives, awareness campaigns, and support services aimed at vulnerable populations. Current data indicates that the district’s HIV prevalence stands at 0.29 percent.

According to officials from the Medical and Health Department, the number of HIV positive cases has decreased from 139 in the previous year, during which 64,875 tests were conducted. In the 2022-23 period, 125 individuals tested positive among 43,636 screenings. Over the years, from 2008 to 2025, a total of 5,58,338 people have voluntarily undergone HIV testing, resulting in 2,589 positive diagnoses.

Community Efforts and Testing Facilities

The district ranks 26th in Telangana for HIV prevalence, with neighbouring Kumram Bheem Asifabad recording the lowest rate at 0.14 percent. Officials highlight the contributions of the voluntary organization SURE, which is actively working to promote awareness among high-risk groups, including homosexual men and female sex workers. SURE operates in 25 villages, providing essential counselling and support services.

For public convenience, four testing centres are operational in the district, including RIMS Adilabad, Utnoor, Boath, and a mobile Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre. Additionally, 27 HIV counselling and testing centres are available through community and primary health facilities. The district also has three blood banks to ensure a steady supply for patients in need.

The State government, along with various voluntary organizations, is extending both legal and financial assistance to those diagnosed with HIV. A notable support measure includes a social security pension of 2,016 INR for affected individuals.

Encouraging Early Testing

Health officials are urging residents to get tested, particularly if they experience symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, weight loss, vomiting, skin diseases, anorexia, or loss of appetite. The ongoing efforts in Adilabad reflect a commitment to reducing the stigma surrounding HIV and improving health outcomes through proactive measures.

As testing and awareness initiatives continue to expand, the district aims to further reduce HIV prevalence and support those affected by the virus. The concerted collaboration between health authorities and community organizations is pivotal in creating a healthier future for residents of Adilabad.
