Smriti Mandhana’s Stunning Review Decision Leads to Century
The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup match on October 23, 2025, between India and New Zealand featured an unusual moment involving Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana. In a surprising turn of events at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Mandhana appeared to be unaware that she had edged a delivery from New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr.
During the 27th over, Mandhana, who was batting at 77 runs, attempted a sweep shot but missed. The on-field umpire promptly raised his finger to signal her out. Despite this, Mandhana consulted with her teammate Pratika Rawal and decided to take a review as the time was running out. In an unexpected move, she began walking towards the dressing room even after requesting the review.
As the replays were shown, it became clear that Mandhana had indeed edged the ball. The snickometer confirmed the edge, allowing her to return to the crease, much to the astonishment of those watching. Such a lack of awareness regarding an edge is uncommon in cricket, and the incident sparked conversation among fans and analysts alike.
Mandhana Capitalizes on Second Chance
Following this bizarre incident, Mandhana made the most of her reprieve. After scoring half-centuries in her previous two matches, she not only resumed her innings but also reached her maiden century in the ongoing World Cup. Mandhana completed her 100 runs in just 89 balls, significantly contributing to a substantial opening partnership with Rawal.
This century marks Mandhana’s 14th in One Day Internationals (ODIs), placing her just one behind Meg Lanning in the list of women players with the most centuries in 50-over cricket. Overall, it is the 17th century of her career across international formats, which ties her with Lanning for the most centuries in history.
Historic Achievements in Women’s Cricket
In addition to her century, this achievement marks Mandhana’s fifth ODI hundred in 2025, tying her with South Africa’s Tazmin Britz for the most centuries in a calendar year. Notably, this is also her third century in the Women’s World Cup, equalling the record for the most by an Indian player, alongside Harmanpreet Kaur.
Throughout the tournament, Mandhana has surpassed 300 runs, making her one of the standout performers despite a slow start. Her remarkable skills and resilience continue to impress fans and cricket analysts, solidifying her status as a key player in the ongoing World Cup.
Mandhana’s experience serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sports, where moments of confusion can lead to significant turning points. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on her as she aims to lead India to further success.
