Rani Mukerji Pays Tribute to Daughter at National Film Awards

The 71st National Film Awards took place on October 25, 2023, at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, celebrating significant contributions to Indian cinema. Among the luminaries present were President Droupadi Murmu, Mohanlal, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Ekta Kapoor, Karan Johar, and Meghna Gulzar. Rani Mukerji captured attention not only for her award-winning performance but also for a heartfelt tribute to her daughter, Adira Chopra.
Mukerji received the Best Actress National Film Award for her role in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, a film that addresses the struggles of a mother fighting for custody of her children against the backdrop of Norwegian authorities. For the prestigious event, she wore a traditional saree designed by her favourite designer, Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The ensemble was complemented by a touching detail: a simple gold chain inscribed with her daughter’s name, symbolizing her presence at the ceremony.
The actress has consistently maintained her daughter’s privacy, often reiterating her desire to keep Adira’s life away from the public eye. “I tell them, do not snap pictures of the newborn. They stare into my eyes and get terrified,” Mukerji explained during an appearance on Karan Johar‘s chat show. She expressed gratitude towards the media for respecting her wishes regarding her child’s privacy.
Celebrating a Milestone
Upon receiving her first National Award after a three-decade career, Mukerji expressed her overwhelming gratitude. “I’m overwhelmed to have won the National Award for my performance in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. This is the first-ever National Award in my 30-year career,” she stated. Her heartfelt acceptance speech highlighted not only her personal achievements but also acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the film.
Mukerji thanked the film’s producers, Nikkhil Advani, Monisha Advani, and Madhu Mantena, as well as director Ashima Chibber. She emphasized the film’s theme, stating, “This truly special project celebrated the resilience of motherhood.” For Mukerji, this accolade represents a validation of her extensive body of work and her deep commitment to the craft of acting.
A Night of Recognition
The National Film Awards serve as a platform to recognize the artistic achievements of individuals in the Indian film industry. The event showcased not only established stars but also emerging talent, reflecting the rich tapestry of storytelling in Indian cinema. As Mukerji took to the stage, her elegance and poise resonated with the audience, further solidifying her status as a respected figure in the industry.
Through her poignant tribute to Adira and her heartfelt acceptance speech, Rani Mukerji highlighted the profound connection between motherhood and her artistic journey. As she continues to captivate audiences with her performances, her commitment to both family and film remains a central theme in her life.
