Over 7,000 Women Unite in Historic ‘Thiyo Naam’ Performance

In a remarkable demonstration of cultural unity, over 7,000 women gathered at the Chandi Baruah Stadium in Howly, Assam, on August 24, 2023, to perform the traditional folk devotional dance known as ‘Thiyo Naam’. This event set a new state record recognized by the Assam Book of Records while also attempting to achieve a world record. The initiative was part of the 97th Howly Raas Mahotsav and aimed to highlight and preserve this unique aspect of Assamese cultural heritage.
Women from twelve districts across Lower Assam participated in the performance, which showcased their dedication and passion for ‘Thiyo Naam’. The event resulted from nearly five months of rigorous training and preparation, illustrating the commitment of the participants to this cultural tradition. On this occasion, the gathering paid tribute to Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, coinciding with the eve of his birth centenary.
The emotional highlight of the event was when approximately 12,000 attendees, including participants and audience members, joined together to sing Dr. Hazarika’s iconic song “Manuhe Manuhor Babe.” This poignant moment resonated deeply, reflecting the song’s enduring message of humanity and togetherness.
Ranjit Kumar Dass, Assam’s Cabinet Minister, expressed his admiration for the event, stating, “This is my first time witnessing such a massive Thiyo Naam performance. I thank all the naamotis and the organising committee for making this event possible.” His acknowledgment underscores the significance of the event not only as a cultural performance but also as a unifying force within the community.
The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including BTR EM Gautam Das, Burhasatriya Dr. Babul Chandra Das of Borpetaa Satra, Nirmal Adhikari, Sattradhikar of Sundaridiya Satra, and Dharmeswar Adhikari of Moinbori Satra. The presence of these dignitaries added to the event’s prestige and highlighted its importance in the cultural landscape of Assam.
Through this vibrant gathering, the participants not only celebrated their cultural identity but also set an inspiring example of community spirit and resilience. As they performed in unison, the event served as a reminder of the power of collective effort in preserving and promoting cultural heritage on both a national and global scale.
