Maharashtra CM Honors Veteran Actor Govardhan Asrani’s Legacy
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to veteran actor Govardhan Asrani, who passed away on October 20, 2023, at the age of 82. Asrani, affectionately known for his versatility, left an indelible mark on Indian cinema, captivating audiences with his diverse performances.
Asrani’s health had deteriorated after he was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in suburban Juhu four days prior, suffering from breathing complications. He succumbed to complications related to fluid accumulation in the lungs.
Tribute from the Chief Minister
In his condolence message, Fadnavis described Asrani as “synonymous with wholesome entertainment,” emphasizing the significant loss his passing represents for the film industry. The Chief Minister noted that Asrani’s roles, whether comedic or serious, resonated deeply with viewers.
“His powerful and lively acting made every role memorable,” Fadnavis stated, highlighting Asrani’s iconic portrayal of the jailer in the classic film Sholay. This role, among many others, cemented Asrani’s legacy in the hearts of fans and within the industry.

Fadnavis acknowledged the numerous awards and accolades Asrani received throughout his illustrious career, reflecting his invaluable contributions to Hindi cinema and the performing arts. His work has been recognized widely, underscoring his status as a beloved figure in Indian entertainment.
“His demise is a great loss to Hindi cinema, his admirers, and his family,” the Chief Minister added. He extended his condolences to Asrani’s family, expressing hope that they would find strength in this difficult time.
