Following the success of the recent Superman film, James Gunn has unveiled the first poster for the upcoming Supergirl movie. The poster features Supergirl casually sipping a drink next to her iconic logo, presenting a fresh and unexpected take on the character. This unveiling comes shortly after audiences were introduced to the new superheroine in a scene from the Superman film, which stars David Corenswet.

In that scene, Supergirl is depicted at the Fortress of Solitude, playfully attempting to retrieve her dog, Krypto, from Superman while appearing somewhat inebriated. Gunn shared the poster on his social media on July 16, 2023, capturing Supergirl’s rebellious spirit with a tagline that reads “Look Out,” contrasting sharply with Superman’s “Look Up.”

Exploring Supergirl’s Complex Character

The film will feature Milly Alcock in the role of Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. In an interview with ScreenRant, Gunn described this version of Supergirl as a “complete mess,” emphasizing the stark differences between her background and that of her cousin, Superman. He noted that while Superman enjoys a loving upbringing, Supergirl’s history is fraught with challenges that have shaped her character.

“Yeah, that’s her. She’s a mess,” Gunn stated, explaining that she has endured a much harsher upbringing. He elaborated, “As we learn, she’s had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background.”

In a separate discussion with ComicBook, Gunn provided further insight into Alcock’s portrayal of Supergirl. Rather than presenting her as a cheerful counterpart to Superman, the film aims to delve into her emotional struggles and the battles she faces. Gunn highlighted the importance of her backstory, stating that flashbacks to Krypton could play a role in illustrating the differences between her and Superman.

Film Details and Release Date

Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl will draw inspiration from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series. The cast will also include Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, Jason Momoa, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham.

The film is set to be released in theatres in June 2026, and it is anticipated that Gunn’s interpretation will resonate with audiences seeking a deeper understanding of the character. With this fresh perspective on Supergirl, the film aims to explore themes of resilience and personal struggle, offering a dynamic addition to the DC Universe.
