Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila Leads with Eight Nominations at SWA Awards 2025

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has garnered significant recognition for his film Amar Singh Chamkila, which received eight nominations at the upcoming Screenwriters Association Awards (SWA). This seventh edition of the awards, scheduled for August 9, 2025, will celebrate outstanding films, series, and television shows from 2024 that have advanced the art of storytelling.
The musical drama, which features Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role and Parineeti Chopra as his love interest, stands out in categories such as Best Story, Best Screenplay, Best Dialogues, and Best Lyrics. Irshad Kamil, the film’s lyricist, is nominated for his work on five tracks, including “Baaja,” “Bol Mohabbat,” “Ishq Mitaye,” “Naram Kaalja,” and “Vida Karo.”
Other notable contenders in the Best Story and Screenplay categories include Atul Sabharwal for Berlin, Avinash Sampath for CTRL, Karan Gour for Fairy Folk, and Kunal Kemmu for Madgaon Express. The Best Dialogue category features nominees such as comedian-writer Sumukhi Suresh for CTRL and Karan Gour for Fairy Folk, alongside Devang Tiwari and Amit Pradhan for Jo Tera Hai Woh Mera Hai, Niren Bhatt for Stree 2, and Kemmu for Madgaon Express.
In the Best Debut category, nominees include Shuchi Talati for Girls Will Be Girls, produced by Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal. The competition also features writers Biplab Goswami and Sneha Desai for Laapataa Ladies, and Bodhayan Roychaudhury for Sector 36. Additionally, Sagar‘s song “Tu Hai Toh” from Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, is nominated for Best Lyrics.
The SWA Awards also recognize excellence in web series, with nominees such as Panchayat 3 and Gullak 4 leading in the Best Story, Best Screenplay, and Best Dialogue categories. Other contenders in the Best Web Comedy/Musical category include Bandish Bandits 2, Cubicles 4, and Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper. Additionally, series like Raat Jawaan Hai and Mamla Legal Hai received nominations in the Best Screenplay and Dialogue categories.
Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and lyricist A M Turaz have been nominated in the Best TV/Web Lyrics category for their work on the song “Saiyaan Hatto Jaao” from Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Other nominees include Akhil for “Zaroori Toh Nahi” from the series Citadel: Honey Bunny, and Juno for “Asman Rootha” and “Feeling Nayi Hai” from Panchayat 3 and Gullak 4, respectively.
On television, the popular show Anupamaa, starring Rupali Ganguly, has secured nominations in major categories like Best Story and Best Dialogue. Another well-regarded series, Bas Itna Sa Khwaab, is also nominated for similar accolades.
As the SWA Awards approach, the film and television community eagerly anticipates the recognition of creativity and innovation in storytelling, with Amar Singh Chamkila leading the pack.
