David Letterman Criticizes CBS for Cancelling Colbert’s Show

David Letterman has expressed his disapproval of CBS’s decision to cancel Stephen Colbert‘s version of The Late Show. In an interview with his former executive producer, Barbara Gaines, Letterman characterized the move as an act of “pure cowardice.” He challenged CBS’s assertion that financial factors were behind the cancellation, suggesting that the network’s motivations were more complex.

Letterman pointed out the inconsistency in CBS’s financial reasoning, stating, “They’ve given [Colbert] another 10 months; that’s another huge chunk of money they’re gonna lose.” He questioned the timing of the cancellation, emphasizing that if significant financial losses had occurred, it would have been evident much earlier. “You’re telling me losing this kind of money happened yesterday?” he asked, indicating skepticism about the network’s claims.

The cancellation of Colbert’s show, which was announced on July 17, 2023, will see it continue airing until the end of the 2025-26 season. Letterman believes that CBS mishandled Colbert, who he describes as “the face of that network,” and suggested that the network’s leadership would one day regret their decision-making.

Letterman also connected the show’s cancellation to CBS’s recent settlement with Donald Trump regarding a lawsuit related to 60 Minutes. Trump had filed a $10 billion lawsuit against CBS, claiming the network deceptively edited an interview with Kamala Harris to benefit the Democratic Party. He later increased his damages claim to $20 billion. The lawsuit was settled a few weeks ago, with CBS reportedly compensating Trump $20 million.

In his remarks, Letterman stated, “This is pure cowardice… they decided, ‘Aw, we’re sorry, let us give you $20 million.’ I believe this is in the wake of that.” His comments reflect a broader concern about how CBS is navigating its relationships with prominent personalities and the implications of its actions on its reputation.
