Bollywood Icon Dharmendra Dies at 89, Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra passed away in Mumbai at the age of 89, just days shy of his 90th birthday. The news emerged following reports of an ambulance leaving his residence on November 24, prompting many celebrities to gather at the Juhu crematorium. Although his family has not issued an official statement, filmmaker Karan Johar took to social media to share the tragic news, marking a profound loss for the Indian film industry.
Dharmendra, affectionately known as Bollywood’s “He-Man,” enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over six decades and featuring more than 300 films. The cause of death has yet to be disclosed, but the actor had been experiencing health issues since his admission to Breach Candy Hospital on November 1. His final film, Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan, is set to release on December 25, 2025, and stars Agastya Nanda and Jaideep Ahlawat.
Tributes Flood In for a Cinematic Legend
As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from across the film industry. Renowned actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan, expressed their condolences and paid their last respects. Karan Johar described Dharmendra as “a bonafide legend of Indian cinema,” stating that his passing represents the end of an era. In a heartfelt post, Johar emphasized Dharmendra’s warmth and humanity, noting the irreplaceable void left behind in the industry.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dharmendra showcased unmatched versatility. He transitioned effortlessly from romantic leads in films like Phool Aur Patthar and Aaye Din Bahar Ke to rugged action roles in Dharam Veer and Hukumat. His portrayal of Veeru in the iconic 1975 film Sholay remains one of the most beloved performances in Indian cinema. Even in recent years, he captivated audiences with his roles in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023) and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024).
Born on December 8, 1935, in Nasrali village, Punjab, Dharmendra began his film career in 1960 with the movie Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. His striking looks, natural charisma, and ability to adapt to various genres propelled him to stardom. His contributions to Indian cinema were recognized when he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012.
A Family Legacy
Dharmendra is survived by his two wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, along with his six children: Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta, Ajeeta, Esha Deol, and Ahana Deol. His family and fans mourn the loss of a man who not only shaped the film industry but also touched countless lives through his work.
As tributes continue to pour in, Dharmendra’s legacy as a cinematic icon will remain etched in the hearts of millions, a testament to his enduring impact on Indian cinema.
