BIGHIT MUSIC Takes Legal Action to Protect BTS from Harassment

BIGHIT MUSIC has confirmed its commitment to legal action against individuals perpetrating harmful acts against the members of BTS. In a statement released on September 29, 2023, the agency outlined its zero-tolerance stance on malicious online and offline behaviors, including stalking and privacy violations directed at the globally popular K-pop group.
The agency emphasized that it is actively pursuing legal recourse against the authors of harmful posts identified through reports from fans and extensive monitoring of various platforms. These include domestic sites such as Naver, Daum, DC Inside, Instiz, Ilgan Best, FMKorea, as well as music services like Melon, Bugs Music, and Genie Music. Additionally, international social media channels like X, Instagram, and YouTube are part of the monitoring efforts.
Legal Framework and Consequences for Malicious Acts
BIGHIT MUSIC reiterated that actions such as defaming artists, spreading false rumors, or using insulting language, even in anonymous online spaces, can result in criminal charges under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection. Some complaints filed last year have already been forwarded to prosecution with recommendations for indictment as of July 2023, while new investigations are currently underway.
Authorities have summoned suspects for questioning, and in certain cases, warrants have been executed, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to addressing these serious issues. The legal framework in place allows for significant repercussions for those who violate the rights and safety of the artists.
Ensuring BTS Members’ Safety and Privacy
In addition to addressing online harassment, the agency has responded to recent attempts at break-ins into the homes of BTS members. BIGHIT MUSIC confirmed its ongoing cooperation with law enforcement to ensure thorough investigations into these incidents. The agency underscored that trespassing, loitering outside private residences, leaking personal information, and any actions that infringe upon the artists’ privacy are subject to criminal prosecution.
The agency closed its statement by urging fans to respect the safety and privacy of BTS members. “We are always grateful for the affection and dedication shown by the fans of BTS. BIGHIT MUSIC will continue to work to ensure that the rights of our artists are fully protected,” the statement noted.
This proactive approach from BIGHIT MUSIC highlights the agency’s dedication to safeguarding its artists and maintaining a secure environment for them amid rising concerns over their safety.
