Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan emphasized that while many of his films address social issues, it has been an organic process rather than a deliberate choice. Speaking at the Indian Film Festival of India 2025 (IFFI), Khan highlighted his primary goal as an actor is to entertain audiences, not to position himself as an activist.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Khan has starred in numerous films that have sparked important conversations. Titles like Taare Zameen Par, Dangal, Rang De Basanti, and PK have effectively engaged viewers in discussions about societal challenges. During the IFFI event, he shared insights into his script selection process, revealing that his choices are driven by emotional resonance rather than market trends.

Choosing Scripts Based on Emotional Connection

Khan explained that he selects films based on the emotional excitement they evoke in him. “I choose films purely based on my emotional excitement for the story, even if it goes completely against the norm,” he stated. He recounted how his decision to work on Lagaan was initially met with skepticism from industry veterans, such as Javed Akhtar, who advised against it. “By all logic, I shouldn’t have become a star; I broke every rule. But somehow, those unconventional choices connected with people, and I’m deeply grateful,” he added.

The actor clarified that while many of his films touch on significant social themes, this occurs naturally rather than through a strategic agenda. “I am a complete film personality, not an activist. My primary objective is to entertain my audience,” he reiterated.

A Tribute to Dharmendra and Upcoming Projects

In addition to discussing his film choices, Khan paid tribute to veteran actor Dharmendra during the festival. He shared fond memories of their time together and disclosed that he was fortunate to have shown Dharmendra the film Lahore 1947 before the actor’s passing. “I had the good fortune of showing him the film. So he has seen the film,” Khan remarked, expressing gratitude for the opportunity.

Produced by Khan and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Lahore 1947 is based on the acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Ni by Asghar Wajahat. Khan noted that this was one of Dharmendra’s favourite scripts, and he felt privileged to share it with him.

As Khan continues to navigate his illustrious career, his organic approach to storytelling remains a hallmark of his work. By prioritizing emotional connections and entertaining narratives, he hopes to inspire audiences while sparking important dialogues through cinema.
