Varanasi Ropeway Project Nears Completion, Ticket Prices Announced
Residents of Varanasi are set to benefit from a new ropeway project that aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the city. The ropeway will connect vital locations, including the Varanasi Cantt Railway Station and Godaulia Chowk, effectively reducing travel time from approximately 45 to 50 minutes by road to just 15 minutes by ropeway. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance transportation for both locals and tourists.
With the project nearing completion, the city administration reported that trial operations for the ropeway are scheduled to commence in July 2025. Ongoing research and technical assessments are being conducted to ensure the system’s safety and efficiency. Once operational, the ropeway will span five key stations: Varanasi Cantt, Kashi University, Rath Yatra, Church, and Godowlia Square.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Varanasi, laid the foundation stone for this ambitious project in March 2023. As of now, approximately 90% of construction work has been completed, with the official opening anticipated by December 2025, although a specific date has yet to be announced.
The ropeway stations are designed to accommodate modern passenger amenities, including escalators, lifts, ramps, and parking facilities. This focus on accessibility underscores the project’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience for all users.
While the exact ticket pricing has not been officially confirmed, preliminary estimates suggest that fares will range from Rs 100 to Rs 150 per person for a one-way trip. City officials have clarified that the service will not be free for passengers, reflecting the need for sustainable operational funding.
The Varanasi ropeway project represents a significant step forward in urban transport infrastructure, promising to ease congestion and improve connectivity in one of India’s most historically significant cities. As the city prepares for the upcoming trials, anticipation continues to build around the potential benefits this new mode of transport will bring.
