The Supreme Court of India has declined petitions seeking an extension of the six-month deadline for registering Waqf properties as mandated by the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The Court directed applicants to take their requests to the Waqf Tribunal, stating that remedies are available through that avenue.

During a session on Monday, a bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih emphasized that the Act provides a clear process for applicants to address their concerns. The deadline for registration is set for December 6, 2025, and the Court urged applicants to file any necessary requests with the Tribunal by that date.

Applicants expressed that their challenges extended beyond mere registration on the UMEED portal, highlighting issues related to the digitisation of records. They argued that the deadline would expire before the Tribunal could adequately assess these difficulties.

In response, the justices clarified that individuals encountering genuine technical or procedural obstacles could seek relief from the Tribunal. This includes the possibility of an extension. The bench stated, “If the time freezes in the portal, you cannot be held responsible. If the Tribunal allows you, your six months will be counted, and your application will be considered.”

The Court reassured applicants that they do not need prior permission to approach the Tribunal for assistance. If any complications arise, they can still appeal to the Supreme Court for further help. This approach aims to ensure that all applicants have the opportunity to navigate the registration process without undue hardship.

As the deadline approaches, stakeholders in the Waqf community will need to adapt swiftly to the existing legal framework to secure their property registrations. The decision reinforces the importance of utilizing the mechanisms provided by the law while maintaining a focus on resolving any arising challenges efficiently.
