Nagaland Secures Rs 4.78 Crore for Developmental Initiatives
Nagaland has been allocated a funding amounting to Rs 4.78 crore by the North Eastern Council (NEC) to enhance various developmental programmes. This financial support, announced in November 2023, aims to promote tourism, develop youth and sports infrastructure, and bolster indigenous cultural initiatives. The official announcement was made on December 9, 2023.
The funding is part of a broader disbursement of Rs 56.22 crore released to all eight northeastern states, intended to enhance infrastructure, support livelihoods, and promote cultural initiatives. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and the NEC Secretariat in Shillong confirmed these allocations aimed at fostering sustainable development across multiple critical sectors.
The NEC’s commitment extends to areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, culture and heritage, education, and skill development. The council has reiterated the importance of timely fund disbursement and effective collaboration with state agencies to ensure meaningful outcomes.
Focus on Community and Skill Development
In addition to state allocations, the NEC has also earmarked Rs 14.89 crore for various central agencies and cultural organisations. This funding is directed towards supporting regional events and academic engagements. Among the key interventions backed by the NEC this month are projects aimed at community development for indigenous groups and the establishment of animal feed production units.
Other notable initiatives include scientific pig-breeding facilities and the development of piggery value-chain infrastructure. The NEC also supports the documentation of traditional medicinal knowledge and the expansion of tele-education through smart virtual classrooms.
Sports infrastructure development in Manipur received attention under the same funding tranche, highlighting the NEC’s commitment to enhancing sporting facilities across the region.
Completed Initiatives and Future Plans
The NEC reported the successful completion of a fire-safety and skill training initiative that was sanctioned in March 2023. This initiative includes the installation of rainwater harvesting reservoirs at Dimapur and Khuzama, as well as the enhancement of infrastructure at a skill training centre in Chiechama.
These projects are designed to improve fire safety preparedness and provide structured training for youth who aspire to join emergency and disaster-response services. The NEC remains focused on fostering a collaborative environment that encourages the development of essential skills and infrastructure in Nagaland and the wider northeastern region.
