Mumbai Reservoirs Near Capacity Following Heavy Rainfall

The water levels in Mumbai’s reservoirs have surged to 98.96 percent of total capacity, thanks to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the combined water stock in the city’s seven major reservoirs now totals 14,32,375 million litres. This significant rise in water levels supports the city’s drinking water supply, essential for its millions of residents.
As of September 24, 2023, the water stock breakdown reveals that Modak Sagar is at full capacity with 100 percent, while Tansa holds 98.53 percent. Other reservoirs report substantial levels: Middle Vaitarna at 98.96 percent, Upper Vaitarna at 99.58 percent, Bhatsa at 98.62 percent, Vehar at 100 percent, and Tulsi also at 100 percent. These reservoirs collectively supply water to various regions of the city, ensuring that essential services continue without disruption.
Weather Forecast and Alerts
Looking ahead, Mumbai is expected to see a generally cloudy sky accompanied by light to moderate rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, which may bring lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h in isolated areas. A yellow alert has been issued, warning residents about the potential for localized rainfall and strong winds, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable regions.
Additionally, significant tidal activity is anticipated, with a high tide of 4.07 meters expected at 13:02 local time on September 24. This will be followed by a low tide of 0.63 meters at 19:04. The following day, another high tide of 4.21 meters is predicted at 01:35, with a low tide of 1.54 meters occurring at 07:12.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant as conditions may pose risks, especially in areas prone to flooding. The BMC and IMD continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates as necessary to safeguard public safety and ensure the integrity of the city’s water supply system.
