Kia has announced the upcoming launch of a taxi variant of the Carens Clavis EV in India, marking a significant step for the South Korean automaker into the commercial vehicle segment. This move comes six years after Kia’s initial entry into the Indian market in 2019, as the company seeks to diversify its offerings beyond traditional passenger cars.

According to a document obtained by Team-BHP, the new taxi variant will be designated as the HTM grade, distinct from the private versions which include the HTK+, HTX, HTX ER, and HTX+ ER trims. The HTM grade draws its design from the HTK+ trim, ensuring that while it caters to the taxi market, it does not compromise on style or essential features.

Features and Specifications of the Carens Clavis EV Taxi Variant

The Carens Clavis EV HTM will come equipped with several noteworthy features despite its commercial focus. It will include 16-inch black alloy wheels, Star Map connected LED daytime running lights, LED fog lamps, and a robust Ice Cube Multi Face Reflector-type LED headlamp system. Additionally, it will feature Active Air Flaps, a 25-litre frunk for extra storage, and auto-folding outside rearview mirrors.

Inside the vehicle, customers can expect a well-appointed cabin with a 12.25-inch HD digital instrument cluster and a matching 12.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The model will also boast five USB Type-C ports, a six-speaker sound system, and a stylish combination of fabric and semi-leatherette upholstery in a black and beige two-tone scheme.

Safety and performance are also prioritized in this variant. The taxi version will include a GPS tracker equipped with six panic buttons and a speed limiter that restricts acceleration to 80 km/h. Notably, the taxi variant will not include a child lock system, which is a significant consideration for passenger safety.

The Carens Clavis EV taxi will be powered by a lower-output electric motor producing 133 hp and 255 Nm of torque, paired with a smaller NMC battery pack that offers a capacity of 42 kWh. This configuration provides a driving range of 404 km, comparable to the standard-range variant of the regular model.

Pricing and Market Launch

In terms of pricing, the Carens Clavis EV HTM is set to retail at 18,19,000 rupees (ex-showroom), slightly higher than the HTK+ variant, which is priced at 17,99,000 rupees. With the comprehensive feature list and specifications now revealed, industry experts anticipate that the market launch will occur shortly.

Kia’s entry into the taxi market with the Carens Clavis EV reflects its strategic vision to tap into India’s expanding commercial vehicle sector. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, the success of this new variant could provide Kia with a significant competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market.
