Jaishankar and Azizi Discuss Trade Expansion in New Delhi
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Afghanistan’s Industry and Commerce Minister Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi in New Delhi to discuss enhancing trade and connectivity between the two nations. This meeting is part of a five-day visit by Azizi, during which he will engage with Indian officials and business leaders to strengthen bilateral relations.
During their discussions, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to Afghanistan’s development and welfare, highlighting the importance of fostering closer ties. The Afghan minister expressed intentions to significantly increase trade with India, aiming to raise it from $900 million to between $2 billion and $3 billion. This ambitious plan comes in response to recent disruptions in Kabul’s exports, particularly following tensions with Pakistan.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Azizi’s visit is notable as it marks the second-highest official visit by an Afghan Taliban minister to India, following the earlier visit of Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. In his previous discussions, Muttaqi emphasized the longstanding historical relationship between India and Afghanistan, citing that trade between the two nations had previously exceeded $1 billion.
The current dialogue focuses not only on trade but also on enhancing people-to-people connections. Azizi engaged with Afghan traders residing in India to explore opportunities for market access and expand trade relations. This proactive approach aims to solidify Afghanistan’s economic partnership with India amidst a challenging regional landscape.
Jaishankar’s commitment to Afghanistan’s welfare underscores India’s strategic interest in the region. The talks reflect a mutual desire to bolster economic ties, ensuring that both countries can benefit from enhanced collaboration. As Afghanistan navigates its post-conflict recovery, strengthening trade routes and fostering economic development will be crucial.
This meeting aligns with India’s broader strategy to support Afghanistan’s economic stability while promoting regional connectivity. The outcomes of these discussions may play a significant role in shaping future trade relations, benefiting both nations as they work towards shared goals of prosperity and stability.
