Indian Railways Announces Fare Hike Effective December 26
Indian Railways has confirmed an increase in passenger train fares, which will take effect on December 26, 2025. This adjustment primarily impacts long-distance travellers, while daily commuters and short-distance passengers will remain unaffected. Railway officials stated that the fare hike is necessary to address escalating fuel, maintenance, and operational costs, while aiming to keep train travel affordable for the majority.
No Change for Daily Commuters
Passengers who rely on suburban trains and monthly season tickets will not see an increase in their fares. This decision provides relief to millions who depend on local trains for their daily commutes. Moreover, those travelling in ordinary class for distances up to 215 kilometres will continue to pay the same fare, ensuring that short-distance and budget travellers are shielded from this fare increase.
Minimal Increase for Long-Distance Travel
For passengers journeying beyond 215 kilometres, the fare increase will be modest. Specifically, the ordinary class fare will rise by 1 paisa per kilometre, while fares for Mail and Express non-AC trains will increase by 2 paise per kilometre. The same increment applies to all categories of AC class travel. Railway officials emphasized that even with these adjustments, the overall increase in ticket prices will only amount to a few rupees, even on extended journeys.
The implementation of this fare hike reflects the Indian Railways’ commitment to balancing operational costs while maintaining accessibility to train services for the public.
