A Reddit user recently reported a shocking incident involving his Google Pixel 6a, which caught fire while he slept just inches away. The device, charging on a nightstand, ignited unexpectedly, prompting the user to throw it to the floor in panic. He described waking up to a loud noise and a disturbing smell, realizing that his sheets were also on fire.

The user recalled, “I woke up to a loud noise and this horrible smell. The fire had already started. I grabbed the phone by its cord and threw it on the floor. My sheets caught fire.” He shared images of the damaged device, highlighting the severity of the incident, and revealed he suffered a sore throat from inhaling smoke.

Concerns Over Battery Safety

This alarming incident is not isolated. Prior reports have surfaced regarding the Pixel 6a experiencing battery overheating issues. In recent months, users have expressed concern, with at least two others claiming their devices caught fire. One user even reported that their phone “spontaneously combusted in the middle of the night.”

In light of these incidents, Google had previously warned Pixel 6a users about a significant battery overheating problem that could only be remedied by reducing the battery’s capacity and power retention. In June 2023, the company released a software update aimed at addressing these concerns.

Those whose devices were identified as “Impacted Devices” may qualify for a free battery replacement, according to Google. Unfortunately, the Reddit user involved in this latest incident indicated that he lived in an area not eligible for the replacement programme, leaving him without support.

History of Battery Issues

The Pixel 6a is not the first model from Google to face battery-related challenges. Just prior to the launch of the Pixel 9a earlier this year, similar overheating and fire hazard reports emerged concerning the Pixel 4a, leading to a product recall. In addition, in April, Google announced an expanded repair programme to tackle battery swelling problems associated with the Pixel 7a.

As incidents of device malfunctions continue to surface, consumers are urged to stay informed about potential risks and to monitor their devices for any signs of overheating. The ongoing issues with the Pixel 6a serve as a reminder of the importance of safety in technology, particularly as smartphones become integral to daily life.
