Russia’s Fashion Week Takes Center Stage Amid Global Changes

Moscow recently showcased its burgeoning fashion scene by hosting the biannual Moscow Fashion Week in conjunction with the second annual BRICS+ Fashion Summit. This event attracted attention not only for its artistic displays but also for its geopolitical implications, coinciding with a significant meeting of leaders from Russia, India, and China. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin joined Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, highlighting a shift in international alliances as the BRICS+ group expands its influence.
The BRICS+ coalition includes ten nations: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE. These countries are increasingly participating in global discussions, as noted by Shirene Rifai, CEO of Jordan Fashion Week. She remarked, “For too long, fashion was centered only in Paris, Milan, London, and New York. Platforms like BRICS+ are creating spaces for non-western voices to be seen as equal players.”
The impact of international sanctions on Russia’s fashion industry was palpable. Following its military actions in Ukraine in 2022, global brands such as Mercedes Benz withdrew their sponsorship from Moscow Fashion Week. Nevertheless, the event made a comeback with independent sponsorships and successfully hosted its first BRICS+ Fashion Summit in 2024. This summit resulted in over 50 countries signing a memorandum aimed at fostering collaboration and promoting emerging economies, signaling a pronounced shift in global economic influence.
Revolutionizing Fashion Narratives
Historically, India has been perceived primarily as a manufacturing hub in the global textile and garment industry. The BRICS+ Fashion Summit signifies a turning point, as it aims to elevate India’s role, showcasing its talents rather than merely its labor force. According to a report by the International Monetary Fund, by 2024, the gross domestic product (GDP) in purchasing power of the G7 and BRICS groups was nearly equal, with BRICS nations projected to account for over 40% of the world’s economy by May 2025.
Moscow Fashion Week has also evolved significantly, introducing initiatives like the ‘Made in Moscow’ project to support local brands. This season’s venue transitioned from the historical Manege exhibition hall to the contemporary Zaryadye Park, which features multiple auditoriums and spaces for various activities. This shift underscores the city’s commitment to modernity and innovation in the fashion sector.
The event included fashion shows at several iconic locations, such as the Pushkin Museum and the Floating Bridge, creating a festive atmosphere reminiscent of Paris Fashion Week. Notably, 70 designers participated, including international representatives from China, India, and Turkey. Among them, the Indian duo Shantnu & Nikhil made a notable appearance, reflecting a growing interest in cross-cultural collaborations.
Emerging Trends and Young Designers
The current wave of Russian fashion is characterized by its rebellious spirit and edgy designs. Unlike previous eras of opulence associated with oligarchs, young Russian designers are now drawing inspiration from the vibrant music and nightclub scene. This shift is evident in the collections presented, which feature thoughtful treatments of natural fabrics and innovative designs.
Designers such as Olga Selivanova, who showcased her brand Sol, exemplified this trend with layered clothing that played with textures and prints. Other notable participants included Ermi, which focused on a cohesive colour palette, and Za-Za, known for sculptural clothing that transcends traditional fashion boundaries.
Fashion translator Ksenia Shalygina highlighted the diversity of Russian fashion, which draws from various subcultures, including gothic, country, and cyberpunk influences. This eclectic mix presents a rich tapestry of creative expression that is gaining international recognition.
The significance of these developments goes beyond aesthetics; they represent a broader narrative of countries like Russia and India carving out a distinct identity in the global fashion landscape. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these emerging markets challenge traditional power dynamics and redefine the future of fashion on a global scale.
