Osmania General Hospital Unveils Innovative Chest Wall Surgery Techniques

Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in Hyderabad has made a significant advancement in medical practice by hosting its inaugural Pectus Workshop. This event introduced advanced techniques in chest wall corrective surgeries, including the first minimally invasive repair of Pectus Excavatum at the facility. Organized by Dr. Anita Bhalla, head of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, the two-day program featured live surgical demonstrations, hands-on training, academic sessions, and simulation workshops.

A highlight of the workshop was a live pectus corrective surgery performed by Dr. Shyam Kolvekar, chair of St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and head of the UK National Pectus Group. His expertise was instrumental in showcasing the latest surgical techniques, with Dr. Bhalla assisting throughout the procedure. The surgery was broadcast live to various hospitals across Hyderabad, allowing medical professionals to gain insights into the latest advancements in this specialized field.

During his presentation, Dr. Kolvekar emphasized the importance of early intervention, noting that children under the age of 10 may be managed conservatively. He suggested that surgical correction is most effective for children over the age of 12. “This condition is correctable, and timely intervention is crucial,” he stated.

The workshop also presented a unique opportunity for hands-on training with cadaveric specimens, allowing participants to refine their skills under expert supervision. Dr. Abhimanyu Singh, head of anaesthesia at OGH, expressed pride in the pioneering procedure, stating, “The minimally invasive repair of Pectus Excavatum is a significant milestone for our hospital.”

Dr. Bhalla highlighted the necessity of early detection for pectus disorders. “Screening should commence in hospitals, schools, and communities to ensure that children receive the necessary treatment on time,” she urged. This proactive approach aims to raise awareness about chest wall deformities and to promote regular screening practices.
