In Odisha, the newly appointed president of the Biju Mahila Janata Dal (BMJD), Snehangini Chhuria, has claimed that over 4,000 rape cases have been reported in the state during the past 15 months under the ruling BJP government. During a press conference on October 6, 2023, Chhuria criticized the government for its inability to ensure the safety and dignity of women in Odisha.

Chhuria emphasized that the BMJD aims to be the voice for neglected and marginalized women, asserting their commitment to fight for justice. She stated, “The women of Odisha have become unsafe and their dignity has been severely undermined.” Her comments reflect a growing concern among women’s rights advocates regarding the rising instances of violence against women in the region.

Under the leadership of former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the Mission Shakti initiative was launched to empower women by enabling them to showcase their skills and gain recognition in society. Chhuria expressed disappointment, claiming that in just over a year, this program designed to uplift women is now on the brink of closure.

The BMJD leader further alleged that the current atmosphere has driven women and students to desperation, leading to extreme measures, including suicide. “Incidents of rape and harassment are reported in newspapers almost every day, yet the BJP government has failed to take meaningful or concrete action,” she noted.

Chhuria’s statements come amid a broader conversation about women’s safety in India, where cases of violence against women continue to draw national attention. The BMJD’s allegations highlight not only the statistics but also the human impact of such incidents, underscoring the urgent need for effective policy changes.

As the situation continues to develop, the BMJD plans to mobilize support for women’s rights and advocate for safer environments. The party’s commitment to amplifying the voices of women reflects a growing movement within Odisha to address these critical issues head-on.
