Obesity Drives 70% of Knee Damage Cases, Experts Warn

Knee health is under significant threat from obesity, which accounts for nearly 70% of knee damage cases leading to replacement surgeries. This alarming statistic was presented by medical professionals during a pre-inauguration event at Health City Vistaar hospital in Lucknow, ahead of the launch of its advanced robotic knee surgery facility. In contrast, only 30% of knee issues are attributed to genetic or other medical conditions.
The hospital is set to officially open its new facility on Saturday, March 16, 2024, with Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak as the chief guest. During the event, doctors will conduct a live surgery to showcase the capabilities of the new technology.
Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, one of the directors at Health City Vistaar, explained that excess body weight exerts continuous pressure on knee joints. This pressure damages the protective cartilage, resulting in pain, stiffness, and, ultimately, joint failure. For younger patients, particularly those in their 40s, he recommends partial knee replacement if only one section of the joint is affected. This approach allows for easier revision surgery after 15 years and can offer a sustainable solution.
Emphasizing the importance of prevention, Dr. Kapoor noted, “The better option is prevention by controlling weight.”
The hospital’s new robotic system, developed by global technology leader Smith & Nephew, promises improved surgical outcomes. The technology ensures 100% accuracy in implant alignment, which can reduce blood loss, tissue damage, and complications post-surgery. Smaller incisions lead to faster healing times, enabling patients to return to their daily activities sooner.
Dr. Sandeep Garg highlighted that the minimally invasive approach contributes to a smoother recovery experience. He stated, “Looking at the speed of innovation, we believe partial knee replacement may soon become a day-care procedure, where patients can go home the same day.” Dr. Kapoor added that patients should prepare for early discharge, potentially within a day after the procedure.
The trend toward same-day knee replacement surgeries, already common in Western countries, is gaining traction in India with the advancement of robotic technology.
Regarding costs, Dr. Kapoor indicated that total knee replacement surgery at Health City Vistaar will range from Rs 2.75 lakh to 4 lakh, depending on the amenities required and the complexity of each case. Although robotic surgeries may increase the overall cost by 15% to 20%, they offer significant advantages, including fewer complications and enhanced recovery outcomes.
As medical technology continues to evolve, the focus remains on addressing obesity as a critical factor in knee health, underscoring the need for preventive measures and innovative surgical solutions.
