Seminoles Triumph Over Alabama 31-17 in Season Opener
Florida State University (FSU) opened the 2005 college football season with a commanding victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide, defeating them 31-17 in Tallahassee. The game showcased FSU’s dominance, marking a significant turnaround for a team eager to reclaim its place in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) following a challenging previous season.
Head coach Mike Norvell expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance while also revealing a competitive edge. In a recent appearance on The Triple Option podcast, Norvell humorously remarked, “I was kinda pissed, we didn’t win by more,” reflecting the high expectations he has for his players.
Quarterback Tommy Castellanos made headlines earlier this offseason with his bold statement, “Nick Saban can’t save you,” aimed at Alabama players. This pre-game confidence seemed to resonate throughout the FSU squad, contributing to their impressive performance against a traditionally strong opponent.
The game was marked by FSU’s disciplined play, which prevented Alabama’s defense from capitalizing on potential mistakes. Each player displayed commitment, with all squad members attending practice the following week. This level of discipline is crucial as the Seminoles prepare for their next matchup against East Texas A&M on Saturday.
After finishing last season with a disappointing record of 2-10, Norvell and his team are focused on rejuvenating their program’s reputation. Their 2025 schedule appears more favorable, particularly as matchups intensify in the latter half of the season. In Week 3, FSU will host Kent State, followed by consecutive games against Virginia and Miami. The Seminoles will also face formidable opponents such as Pittsburgh, Stanford, Wake Forest, and Clemson, leading up to a crucial finale against the Florida Gators.
As FSU eyes a potential playoff spot in the newly expanded 12-team bracket, Norvell’s leadership and the team’s performance will be pivotal in the coming weeks. With momentum from their opening victory, the Seminoles are poised to make significant strides in the ACC this season.
