Customs Officials Seize Luxury Watch Worth ₹1.7 Million at Airport

A passenger arriving in Ahmedabad from Dubai was apprehended by customs officials after attempting to carry a luxury wristwatch valued at approximately ₹1.7 million (Rs 17 lakh) through the airport’s green channel. The incident occurred on March 6, 2024, and the watch was subsequently seized under the Customs Act.
Officials from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) acted on suspicion when they intercepted the Indian national. An X-ray scan of the passenger’s checked luggage revealed a suspicious image, prompting a thorough investigation. During this examination, customs officials uncovered the luxury watch hidden within the baggage.
The AIU stated that further inquiries are currently underway to ascertain additional details regarding the case. This incident highlights ongoing efforts by customs authorities to monitor and control the flow of high-value items through international airports.
Luxury watches, often considered symbols of status and wealth, can attract attention at customs, especially when their value exceeds the duty-free allowance. The seizure raises questions about the proper declaration of such items by travelers returning from abroad.
As investigations continue, the customs department emphasizes the importance of compliance with regulations. Passengers are reminded to declare any high-value items upon arrival to avoid complications with customs law.
The incident serves as a reminder of the critical role customs officials play in maintaining the integrity of international travel and trade. Their vigilance not only protects local markets but also enhances national security.
