A devastating cloudburst and subsequent landslide in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir early on August 17, 2025, led to the tragic deaths of seven individuals, including five children. The incidents occurred in Jodh Ghati village and Bagra village, following heavy overnight rains that caused water levels to rise dramatically, inundating low-lying areas.

Officials reported that the cloudburst in Jodh Ghati resulted in five fatalities, which included a father and his two young sons. In Bagra, a mother and her daughter were killed due to a landslide triggered by the relentless rains. The Army has been actively involved in rescue operations, evacuating six injured individuals to hospitals in the region.

The deceased have been identified as Surmu Din (32), his sons Fanu (6) and Shedu (5), along with Zulfoon (15) and Tahu (2), all residents of Jodh Ghati. Renu Devi (39) and her daughter Radhika (9) were the victims from Bagra village. Among the injured are Surmu Din’s wife Gogli Begum (26) and their three-month-old daughter, as well as several family members of another victim, Habib Din.

Graphic footage shared on social media depicted the aftermath, showing collapsed mud houses and survivors desperately searching for missing loved ones. The landslide also impacted nearby areas, including Changda villages and sections under the jurisdiction of Lakhanpur police station, although reports indicated no major damage in those locations.

Heavy rainfall has led to significant flooding, with the Ujh River nearing danger levels. Local authorities have urged residents to avoid water bodies, particularly those in hilly areas, as the risk of flash floods remains high. Police have advised people to remain indoors and reach out to local stations or emergency helplines for assistance if needed.

Train services along the Jammu-Pathankot rail line have been disrupted due to the cloudburst, resulting in cancellations and route adjustments for local trains.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah communicated with Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah regarding the disaster, assuring that support from the national government would be provided. Shah stated, “Relief and rescue operations are being carried out by the local administration, and NDRF teams have also been rushed to the site.”

Both Sinha and Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life. Sinha described the situation as “mind-numbing” and emphasized the need for coordinated rescue efforts. He has instructed senior officials to ensure on-site medical assistance and support for those affected.

Chief Minister Abdullah announced ex-gratia assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, which includes Rs 200,000 for each deceased victim, Rs 100,000 for those with severe injuries, and Rs 50,000 for minor injuries. Additionally, financial assistance has been sanctioned for damaged homes, with varying amounts based on the extent of the damage.

As rescue and recovery efforts continue, the weather office has predicted further rainfall in the Jammu division, raising concerns about additional flooding. The public is urged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
